Fire Science Certification vs. Fire Science Degree

Fire Science Certification vs. Fire Science Degree

Fire science encompasses all of the science, technology, and knowledge required for firefighting. The scientific principles behind successful firefighting and fire safety technology are covered further in fire science courses.

Firefighters who wish to move up in their fire departments or expand their career options can consider getting either a fire science certification or a fire science degree. Health Career Institute offers an Associate of Science in Fire Science, which provides two years of instruction in hydraulics, firefighting equipment, fire safety science, and more.

Differences between the certification and the degree

Fire science certification prepares students for entry-level employment into firefighting. The certification programs tend to be targeted and focus on a specific aspect of firefighting. Certifications in fire science can be a great way to enter the field or expand your knowledge in the field.

A degree in Fire Science, on the other hand, will cover many different aspects of firefighting. From learning about fire safety inspection to understanding the ethical and legal considerations in running a fire department, a fire science degree program prepares students for more advanced positions.

Positions like fire chief and fire marshal often require a full degree in addition to years of experience as a firefighter. Choosing to work toward a degree in Fire Science means preparing for a long-term career in firefighting and being qualified to move up when promotions become available.

The Fire Science degree at HCI

The Fire Science degree at HCI is a 60-credit program that prepares graduates for certification in Fire officer I and II and Fire Inspector, as well as for a variety of supervisory and technical positions.

General education courses supplement the fire science program for a well-rounded education that enhances the knowledge gained in the fire science courses. These courses promote transferable skills, such as writing composition and mathematics, that will serve students in their everyday lives.

Hands-on experience is also an important part of the Fire Science degree. In addition to theory courses, students will have labs and field experience for an opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom.

A degree in Fire Science equips graduates with the skills and knowledge they would need for different positions in the fire science field. Learn more by contacting your HCI representative today.
