Male Nursing Statistics

More men are joining the scores of nurses at hospitals and medical centers. Nursing careers provide high-demand skills to the healthcare field. Women have led the forefront of nursing, but men are beginning to realize the potential of this field.

The Statistics of Male Nursing

Nurses of all genders contribute to the care of people in a variety of medical settings. It is a good thing for men to see the value of this field. Lets take a look at some current male nursing statistics:

  • 9 percent of nurses are male. This amounts to 330,000 male nurses in the field. Women make up 91 percent of all nurses, which is 3.2 million nurses.
  • Around 41 percent of nurse anesthetists were male in 2011. What is a nurse anesthetist? These nurses are advanced practice nurses who work specifically with anesthesia. It is specialized nursing because great care needs to be taken when administering anesthesia.
  • More men are becoming licensed vocational nurses and licensed practical nurses. In 2011, 8.1 percent of LPNs and LVNs were men. Thats an increase from 1970 when only 3.9 percent of LPNs were men.
  • Travel nursing has been a draw for many male nurses. This is because travel nursing provides higher pay and flexibility. Travel nurses dont work at one hospital. They will travel to different hospitals across the country and around the world.
  • The average salary for male nurses is $60,700 a year. Salary could be lower or higher depending on experience, education, location, and nursing specialty.
  • In 2011, 9.6 percent of Registered Nurses were men. This is an increase from the 1970s when only 2.7 percent of RNs were men.

Becoming a Male Nurse

Nursing is an in-demand field. Hospitals, nursing homes, medical facilities, emergency medical services, and more require nurses on staff to coordinate care with patients. While the industry has been dominated by women over the years, men are welcome to enter this career field.

Men can train to become nurses by attending a nursing school. HCIs associate of science degree in nursing provides theory and medical courses in professional nursing with hands-on clinical labs and real-world training in a hospital.
