From Paramedic to AS in EMS: Find Out How

Paramedic to AS in EMS

Paramedics are already advanced-level emergency medical service professionals. So, why should you consider getting the AS in Emergency Medical Services?

Earning your associate’s degree in the field shows that you are ready for leadership and advancement opportunities in EMS care. You, too, can go from Paramedic to an AS in EMS.

Transferring in your Paramedic credits

The Associate of Science in EMS offered at Health Career Institute requires 60 credits. The good news is that you will not have to start from the beginning if you are coming from a qualified Paramedic program.

You will need to speak with your enrollment counselor and transfer in 45 credits from your Paramedic program. If you earned your diploma from HCI, the transition will be even easier! You will have already completed the majority of the requirements for earning an AS in EMS.

Once your transferred credits have been approved, you will be taking the required General Education courses (15 credits).

Earning an AS in EMS

English Composition I and II teach writing and communication skills that will benefit you when helping patients or working with other medical professionals.

You will also choose between Liberal Arts Mathematics or Intermediate Algebra. As a Paramedic and EMS professional, you will be dealing with math problems on a daily basis. Math knowledge is essential when working with pharmaceuticals.

Another important course in General Education is Introduction to Psychology. You will learn the basics of psychology and how to apply it in the field when working with patients.

The final required course for earning your AS in EMS is an American history course. A foundational grasp on the history of our country reminds us of where we have come from and how far we can still go.

Once you have completed the General Education requirements and passed the courses, you will have qualified to go from Paramedic to an Associate of Science degree in Emergency Medical Services.

Advancing your career opportunities with an associate degree in your field is a smart move. You have already put in majority of the work and have field experience as well, so why not take the next step and complete your degree?
