Fire Officer

The core values of fire training programs is to provide the current Fire Officer and aspiring officers knowledge that will aid in their daily performance as a company officer. Health Career Institute’s Fire Officer program gives training for those seeking certification in Fire Officer I and Fire Officer II and prepares them for career advancement in a variety of technical and supervisory positions within the fire service.

Topics covered include developing the proper mind set, accountability and responsibility, cultural diversity, safety and wellness, total quality management, public relations, functional leadership, incident command, affirmative action issues, budgeting process, strategic planning, and strategy and tactics.

Although each program teaches the same practice, they may execute differently. Below is an example of what types of course training you may see in this certification program.

Fire Officer I

Acting Officer in Charge for the Fire Service (32 hours) – This introductory course of training will be for the firefighter who is ready to take on the responsibility, training, and desire in becoming a Fire Company Officer. Aspiring and current fire company officers will use it to remain informed about essential and innovative management, leadership, and human relations concepts.

Transitional and Interpersonal Leadership (42 hours) – This is a 42-hour course. It will be the second step in a series of courses leading to the development of a Company Officer. The student will be asked to address the change, individually and professionally, within themselves based on ethical principles and practices of Fire Department Management. The benefit of the training gives understanding to the actual transition from line firefighter to company officer.

Fire Department Supervision (36 hours) – This is the final course for Fire and Emergency Services personnel for Fire Officer 1 level of training. The student will be introduced the subtleties and responsibilities of the position. Communications model, training, providing educational programs, responding to the public, general administration functions, health and safety.

Fire Officer II

Fire Department Management (80 hours) – The students will be introduced to the job requirements of a Company Officer for Fire and Emergency Services. Topics include governmental theory, human resource management, administrative functions, policy/procedures, fire prevention, risk management, information management, incident operations, and post incident analysis.
