The truth of the matter is, not everyone is cut out for this level of importance in their everyday life. As a firefighter, you are a community leader, a role model and a beacon of safety to those around you. Helping people every day can be a great challenge, but if it’s one you feel suited to meet, becoming a firefighter is a great way to rise to the call.
Your career as a firefighter will be fast-paced and always exciting.
There will be other challenges in your work as well, including the intensity of your day-to-day schedule. When a call comes in, you’ll be expected to spring to action, dropping all other tasks or to-dos in order to—see point number one—help the people who really need you. For people who tend to find their minds wandering when not fully engaged, working as a firefighter leaves no room for boredom when the action gets going.
Each day will be different and unpredictable as a firefighter.
Sure, some people will consider this to be a downside. But again, for the easily bored, this is a selling-point of the firefighter life! There is no way to predict what the average day will look like, because there is no average day. Some days you’ll feel like you’re sitting around waiting for the calls to come in, and other days your department will be needing (or providing) back-up.
The camaraderie is real with firefighters.
There are people doing what you’ll do all over the country, and the world. It’s a global brother-sisterhood, not to mention the tight-knit relationships you’ll develop with the colleagues you work with each day. What else can make going to work so much fun?
