Education to Become a Fire Inspector
Fire inspectors are an important part of the fire department.
The fire inspector works with the fire marshal division to make sure that they are up to state code and consult with businesses, builders, attorneys, fire service personnel, and others to help everyone who is involved with a particular property understand the fire safety laws and regulations.
At HCI, students can train for their Fire Inspector certification either by taking the Fire Inspector course or completing the Associate of Science in Fire Science. The A.S. in Fire Science will prepare the graduate with skills and knowledge that can be applied to a variety of careers within the fire department. Students will take 60 credit hours, which will cover general education requirements as well as learning fire code standards and firefighting techniques.
Fire Inspector Education
Fire Science students will take courses in Building Construction for the Fire Service and Construction Documents and Plans Review. These courses provide an inside-look into what it takes to ensure that a building is following fire safety codes in its design and function. Students will learn the elements of construction and design of structures, which is vital when conducting inspections or planning operations.
Learning about the application of fire codes and standards for real-world planning, construction, and inspection jobs is also fundamental to the education for becoming a Fire Inspector. Students will become familiar with fire protection technologies, such as fire alarm systems, water-based fire suppression systems, 2D drawings and schematics for water supply protection plans and egress arrangements.
Becoming a Fire Inspector
Fire Inspector education requires knowing what to look when evaluating a building for its fire safety systems and evacuation plans. If you can identify which exits are the best and the create drawings that show how people in the building can evacuate in event of fire, then you have become one step closer to qualifying for certification as a Fire Inspector.
The education to become a Fire Inspector will prepare the graduate to pass the Florida Firesafety Inspector Certification Examination and begin an exciting career as a Fire Inspector. The A.S. in Fire Science provides the strong educational base you will need to succeed in your career in the fire science field.
